Saanich Senior-Friendly Business Survey
Saanich seniors (55+) were asked what improvements could be made to make it easier and more enjoyable to use the businesses in their area (Shelbourne Street corridor from Cedar Hill to Feltham). Here are some of their suggestions:
Clear clutter on sidewalks in front of businesses
Keep aisles clear
Improved service
Improved safety at crosswalks for walkers, seniors
Accessibility for walkers / wheelchairs
More handicapped entrances (using push button)
Need large general store (like Zellers)
Easier access in parking areas and at parking lot entrances
A place to sit
Better light
Have Seniors' Days
Smaller packages of products
Less music in stores
Accessible washrooms
Clerks trained to deal with mobility/vision/hearing issues
Shuttle bus to Hillside Mall
University Heights needs an interesting place to shop and a clothing store
Making our businesses and neighbourhoods more senior-friendly is not that difficult to do. It simply requires input from the seniors themselves, and a willingness to undertake the changes needed to make their lives easier.
