Obesity on the Rise in Children

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

There are times I lament the loss of common sense in the developed world.

According to an article posted on CBC News, "Babies Should Exercise Daily", A British campaign against obesity says children under the age of five — even those who can't walk yet — should exercise every day.

Really?

Well, now we know for sure, don't we?

Here's one little kid who is taking this advice to heart See Picture of Exercising Baby!

I would be a fan if the NHL respected their boys

Thursday, September 8, 2011

I used to be a Montreal Canadiens fan! We won the cup two years in a row in 1977 and 1978. Those were exciting times!

When I moved to Edmonton to be closer to my son, I enjoyed the Edmonton Oilers in the 80s, but the Canadiens were always my favorite!

I don't watch hockey anymore. I got tired of the gratuitous violence.

Now, I'm not afraid of a fight. My family has a good deal of Irish ancestry. My brother and uncle went off to war. Family reunions aren't complete unless there is a bout of fisticuffs.

The reason I finally got fed up and stopped watching was because I saw the lack of respect the National Hockey League has for their boys in the franchises.

It seems to me the violence in the game has become less about separating the man from the puck and more about separating the man from his head! How many Sydney Crosbys will need to suffer senseless injuries? How many men like enforcers Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak will need to commit suicide because they can't stand the pain any longer? Reference this New York Times Article.

The NHL recently announced how they are getting tough on violence. They would no longer allow "gratuitous attacks to the head". What kind of mealy-mouthed baloney is that? You have to prove that a player INTENDED to hit a player. That's damn hard to do. It shows me the NHL isn't very serious about stemming violence in the game and their trying to wriggle their way out of having to do anything meaningful.

Obviously I still know a few things about hockey - mostly because my son keeps me informed. But as long as the NHL promotes and promulgates violence in the game, I refuse to participate.

"But she's only a little old lady" I hear those NHL franchise owners saying.

But I wonder how many of you share my views? Maybe if there are enough of us, those NHL boys will start sitting up and taking more notice!

Good Bye HST

Friday, August 26, 2011

Well, we did it! The little people won out over big business and the political arrogance of the Liberal party. I for one am glad. Seven percent more for eating out and getting my hair done might not seem that significant to some of you, but I'm on a fixed income. Some of my friends and I are ALREADY walking the line and making some belt-tighening choices.

My next door neighbour takes great pride in having her hair coiffed every month. She's  faced with putting it off and going every six weeks. Another friend of mine wants to fly out to Victoria to visit her granddaughter, but she can't afford it. I don't eat out at restaurants as often.

These might seem like trivial concerns to some of you, but dammit, these are LIFESTYLE choices. I didn't work my tail off for 45 years just to get taxed to death in my golden years, thank you very much!

Thank you Vander Zalm. I never saw eye-to-eye with you when you were actively political (well, I guess you still are, aren't you?), but you are my new hero. Thank you for taking up this task to force a vote.

Shame on you John Winter. Don't you know business can only thrive when the little people are able to spend some money in the economy. You have to have a large middle class in order to have a stable economy. Didn't they teach you that in school?

Hiking on the Galloping Goose

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

With all due respect to Times Colonist reporters Louise Dickson and Carolyn Heiman, I'd like a little more to see more talk and information about WALKING on the Goose! These days, it seems like it is being taken over by cyclists!

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate bikers who are getting out of their cars and making their way to work with their muscles. Saves some money, saves the planet, and some of you handsome bikers have great muscles!

But, heads up you bikers! I'd like a little more respect please. I'm the lady in red who likes to take a walk along the trail in the morning, and I have a message for you. It's MY trail to enjoy too!

There are a few decent riders who are considerate enough to ring a bell or give a verbal salute before passing. Thank you lads and lasses. You are my kind of people.

But there are a few others who seem to make a point of zipping by as close as possible - who seem to get a kick out of seeing if they can give an old granny a heart attack or scare her off the path. Well, I'm not that old, and I don't scare that easily.

My grandson tells me I need to learn some ninja granny moves and jab my walking cane into the tires of offending riders as they zip past, but alas, I'm just not that quick.

So, I'll have to resign myself to blowing off steam in my blog instead. And I'll end with a plea on behalf of seniors in Victoria by asking you to please be considerate to hikers. Especially seasoned hikers like me!

Age is not the issue

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

A terrible accident occurred at the Victoria International Airport when an 82 year old lady drove her car into a group of taxi drivers taking their break and playing cards. One man was killed! My condolences to the families affected by this terrible tragedy.

Here's the story in Times Colonist

Some of my younger friends have been rumbling about the age of this lady, and I've been disturbed by some of their references to how the old should not be driving, followed by a quick look in my direction and an obligatory "present company excluded" or some such nonsense. I finally got mad and I asked one of my young friends... "WHY should you be excluding OR including me? And why the hell are you assuming this has anything to do with the ladies age?"

From where I'm sitting, a driver's license is not a right. It's a privilege. We're all driving around in a lethal weapon and you need to keep your wits about you so you don't go and kill someone! And there are plenty of young people who don't deserve a lisence!

I don't look forward to the day I won't be able to drive, and believe me, honey, I'll probably be driving a lot longer than most of you. But the day will come when I must give up my license and I think I will be gracious enough to walk away from it without complaining. I'll have made plans to get around without.

What plans are YOU making to get around once that day arrives?

I happily gave up my license when I turned 70. I don't want a death like this man at the airport hanging over my head.
